Audition Requirements

Scales:
2 major, 1 minor, 1 chromatic, chosen by the conductor from the list below. Prepare all scales listed for your instrument. Scales must be memorized.

Solo Works:
Prepare two constrasting pieces (solo and/or etude). Length must be a maximum of 4 minutes total. No accompanist is needed. Bring 2 extra copies of the music to the audition. (Percussion should see special instructions below)

Sight Reading:
Chosen by the conductor.

Scale Requirements

Violin: 2 Octaves Major D, E-flat, F. Minor A, D, E
3 Octaves Major G, A, B-flat, C. Chromatic G
Viola: 2 Octaves Major G, A, B-flat. Minor A, D, G
3 Octaves MajorC, D, E-flat, F. Chromatic C
Cello: 2 Octaves Major G, A, B-flat. Minor A, D, G
3 Octaves MajorC, D, E-flat, F. Chromatic C
Bass: 1 Octave Major E-flat, B-flat, C, D, A. Minor A, D, E
2 Octaves Major F, G. Chromatic E
Piano: 2 Octaves Major F, A, D-flat. Minor D, F-sharp, C
Woodwinds & Brass: The number of octaves appropriate to the range of the particular instrument.
Prepare as stated, not concert pitch.

Chromatic Scales
Begin on your lowest comfortable note and play 2 to 3 octaves up and down.

Percussion

Solo Works
One short solo on each of two instruments: timpani, xylophone, or snare. Maximum of 4 minutes total. No accompanist is needed. Bring 2 extra copies of the music to the audition.

Sight Reading:
On snare, timpani, and xylophone.

Scales:
On xylophone: two octaves each.

  • Major Scales of C, F, B-flat, E-flat, G, D, A
  • Minor Scales of A, D, E.
  • Chromatic Scales begin on your lowest comfortable note and play 2 to 3 octaves up and down.
