East Central Illinois Youth Orchestra

The East Central Illinois Youth Orchestra program is organized and managed under the auspices of The Conservatory of Central Illinois to provide the highest quality orchestral experience to young musicians. Participation in the program affords players an excellent opportunity to explore a wide variety of original orchestral repertoire, develop rehearsal skills, improve sight-reading, and enhance their musicianship together with students from other schools throughout the area. Such an opportunity enriches the musical experience and education of the community young musicians and complements other ensemble activities in which students may be involved. Outside of the full orchestra, other ensemble of strings, winds, and chamber music may be organized.

Entrance into the program is by audition and is open to all area instrumental students through high school. There is no official age limit; rather, acceptance and placement are based on musical experience and ability. Students pay a minimal tuition fee, and financial hardship should not prevent any qualified youth from participating in the orchestra program.

The orchestra rehearses once weekly and gives public concerts each winter and spring. In addition, the orchestra participates in the annual Conservatory Playathon, as well as workshops and performances with other youth orchestras in central Illinois. In the 2000-2001 season, the orchestra joined with the Central Illinois Children's Chorus and the Champaign-Urbana Ballet in "A Nutcracker Dream." Guest artist Reid Alexander was featured in a performance of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue on the January concert. Two chamber ensembles from the orchestra took honors in national and international competitions in March of 2001. And the orchestra made a guest appearance in a combined performance with The Prairie Ensemble in November of 2002.
